The birth of Ava DuVernay took place on the 24th of August 1972, in Long Beach California. As a child DuVernay's Aunt Denise inspired her love of artistic expression and creative thinking. DuVernay worked as an evening nurse in order to give her aunt the time she needed throughout the day to indulge in the passion of literature, art and theater. DuVernay became enamored with the 1961 film West Side Story after her aunt recommended it to DuVernay. DuVernay was taught by her mother that art can be used to promote activism. DuVernay learned to be socially mindful by her mother. Even though DuVernay grew up living in Compton with her parents, she spent every summer living in Lowndes County Alabama where her parents lived for many generations. DuVernay's father recalled watching the historic civil rights march through the Edmund Pettus Bridge in the neighboring city of Selma Alabama. The summers she spent in Selma, Alabama would be the inspiration for her later the film about Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. In the year 1990, DuVernay graduated from Saint Joseph High School in Lakewood California. In 1990, she completed her studies at Saint Joseph High School in Lakewood CA. DuVernay began producing for the broadcast industry while she was in her college. DuVernay was a CBS News intern during the O.J. Simpson trial. DuVernay recalled being instructed to look at the trash of a jury member's home. Her work left her dissatisfied in journalism, so she decided to move towards the publicity industry. DuVernay began her career as a junior publicity assistant at a small film studio shortly after she graduated from college. She founded The DuVernay Agency, her PR firm, in 1999. Apart from PR, the agency launched a number of social media and lifestyle networks, including Urban Beauty Collective, the Urban Beauty Collective, Urban Thought Collective, Urban Eye and HelloBeautiful.
